NGHS Extern
2012 Summer Nurse Extern Program Overview
Completed Application Deadline
January 20, 2012
Program Dates
10 week program will be May 21 – July 26, 2012 for those students on the semester schedule.
Interview Selections
Selection for interviewing will be based on submitted application materials. Factors considered include timeliness and quality of the application package, clinical rotations, completeness of material, and Grade Point Average (transcripts should show college course work through December of 2011). To participate in the program, the nurse extern must be in good academic standing with his/her nursing school. A copy of the student’s final grades from spring semester/quarter 2012 must be submitted to Taylor Day, Nurse Recruiter, before the start of the program.
Clinical Placement
Clinical placement will be based upon clinical rotations, identified preferences, and the interview process. Although we attempt to place students in a preferred area, we are not always able to accommodate preferences due to the volume of requests for certain areas and the limited number of positions available.
Extern Role
Extern assignments are limited. The program allows you to work with your preceptor on development of physical assessment, patient teaching, and communication skills. The Georgia Board of Nursing does not permit Nurse Externs to give medications.
Orientation and Continuing Education
The orientation program consists of four class days. During this time, Nurse Externs are introduced to essential policies and procedures including documentation requirements, safety guidelines, and emergency measures. This is followed by one-on-one RN precepting in your assigned clinical area.
Schedule
The program expectation is for the Nurse Extern to be assigned a preceptor and to have the Nurse Extern follow the preceptor’s schedule. Work schedules will be determined by your Nurse Manager. Schedules may include weekend work and day or night shifts.
Temporary Appointment/Compensation
Nurse Externs are classified as PRN employees and are not eligible for benefits. The Nurse Extern pay rate has not been determined at this time. Nurse Externs are eligible to receive differential pay for evenings, nights, and weekends worked.
Overtime
Nurse Externs may not work overtime unless approved by your Nurse Manager.
Continued Employment
The program is designed to last 10 weeks. Opportunities for continued employment after the program may be available. Please check on availability with your Nurse Manager or contact the Nurse Recruiter.
